Brook street between Schoolhouse lane and Ratcliff with Collingwood street next to Schoolhouse lane
The Moores lived at 19 Schoolhouse Lane (Two rooms on the ground floor at the back) They then moved to 8 Schoolhouse Lane (Two rooms upstairs first floor)
Four children were born here. They moved to 4 Warton Place in Schoolhouse Lane. The rest of the family were born here.
When money was more plentiful they moved to 57 Brook Street.
None of the family seem to have known their mothers mother or their fathers parents.
SCHOOL.. .When Mary first went to school, the school was known as Collingwood street School, but the name was changed to Heckford street School after a couple of years. The road name was changed so they changed the school name.
At school During playtime Mary prepared the vegetables for the teachers dinners. She also laid the table, made a pot of tea and went back after 1-30 to wash up. (The teachers would bring in food each day for their dinners)
Mary was supposed to collect 1d per weak from each teacher for this, but she had to chase them for it.
Monday was 'make shift' day when they would bring sandwiches.
The headmistress had a bottle of soda water and dry biscuits. She didn't come in for dinner.
She did come in one day when they had chicken and congratulated Mary on the meal.
Mary missed all her qrammar lessons because she was in the kitchen.
They had christmas parties from the Telephone Company and also from the sarah Heckford Founder??. Two parties in the same year. They were held at Stepney Central Hall-Peoples Palace and presents were given to the children and pictures(stills) were shown.
The church hall was in the school playground and the children put on a christmas show for the parents in this hall each year. one year Mary was chosen to play Rumplestiltskin. She had to fetch a pail of coke, knock at the door and two girls called for a log. Mary fell over a basket and split her chin. Her jaw was tied up for a fortnight and she was unable to play her part. Bill Farrer was on the curtains. He said he had met someone outside the dairy who told him that Mary had cut her throat.
The teachers used to make the dresses. Mary was often in the school plays. one year she was a pedlar in King Lear.
To get into the plays four people would be asked to learn their parts and the best would be chosen to play that part.
The Vicarage, which was large, was at the side of the church. Mary went there for singing. She also went to confirmation classes there and worked as a voluntary worker making shrouds, knitting etc.
Reverend Atherton Knowles was the vicar -he was a big old man with a beard. He used to run all round the streets with the children--he drank in the pub with Frederick. His wife's maiden name was Vigor. She was quite wealthy but he was not.
The majority of people went to church then. There were not many churches but a lot of Pubs. The Swan Hotel was the biggest pub. The others were little pubs on the corner of almost every turning.
Frederick used the pub in Periwinkle Street when he was at work. The pub he used mostly was the Kings Arms or Kings head which was on the corner of Stepney causeway. Mr Gaspalls was the name of the landlord.
Frederick also used Whites House (name of the people who ran it) They were friends of the family.
Fredericks wife Rose went on a couple of outings from whites a few years before she died.
Mary went on Brake outings to Theydon Bois or Loughton. The Brake was a Double Decker pulled by two horses which would be changed at half way. Someone always played a bugle on the Brake and the children would all be singing. The brake dies out and then they went by train. Free tickets would come round and when word was out that the tickets were coming round the mothers rushed round to get them.
Piersons fresh air fund, preceded by a big red banner. They walked along with two banners to the station.
The Brake Outing

Victor Barrall, Wife Mary, Vera, William(Bill)
The banners would say 'Ragged School Union' to Stepney station and on to Theydon Bois or else to Riggs Retreat at Chingford. When they arrived they each received a meat pie and a mug of water. Before coming home they each received a cup of cocoa and a bun.
The parents were at the station to meet them on their return and they were usually as black as coal from the train journey, bringing with them tadpoles in a jar and bunches of buttercups etc.
Father went to work at 6.00am. They would wait for father to return home for breakfast at 8.00am and get from him a few pence to go out with on their outing. They brought home ornaments for mother which they bought from stalls round Riggs Retreat. Also there were gypsy stalls selling Conkers on a string, Donkey rides and a Helter Skelter.
William McCarthy died about 1922/3 at Brook Street. He had been ill and Aunt Rose went and got him and moved him into her home.
Social life revolved around St James Church, White Horse Road, Radcliffe.
Band of Hope..Singing classes..Competitions..Socials.
As it was wartime, soldiers on leave were invited and the girls put on concerts and served teas wearing spotted aprons.
Once a week, usually tuesdays, they had 'scrap Iron'. A platform was built and a brass band came in summer months..Dancing was to the Lancers, Waltz, One Step, Missouri, Valeta (Old time dancing and Barn dance).
On saturday mornings the vicars wife played piano and the girls tried to teach the boys to dance.
Each week they went to communion. One of the vicars daughters went to Kenya as a missionary. Aunt Lilly also wanted to go but mother said no.
Mum had a boyfriend, William Farrer, with whom she was friendly from age l3 till she was 18. She then went out with Victor Barrall' who went to the same church. They married in Barn Street register office, Commercial road at age 20.
